It was a day as indelibly imprinted in memory as the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, or the explosion of Space Shuttle Challenger. Indeed, who could forget the events of September 11, 2001? On that day, terrorists flew a hijacked commercial jet airliner into each of the World Trade Center towers. A third hijacked airliner flew into the Pentagon, while a fourth one crashed in the state of Pennsylvania. Immediately after 9-11, all U.S. commercial and private flights were grounded. In the years after 9-11, airport and aircraft security was heightened to sky-high levels. Security cameras play a leading role in this war against terror.

The First Line of Defense
Since 9-11, countries have poured heaps of money into airport security. They want travelers in airports to feel safe from the time they walk up to the security check-in to the moment they step off of the plane. In particular, airport security camera systems have undergone several significant transformations. The most effective ones include not only the airports themselves, but also the airport’s perimeter and every aircraft in the airport. Both hidden and non-hidden security cameras allow the crew to observe everyone who boards the planes, thereby increasing aircraft safety. Also, various countries use security cameras in different capacities. In Washington D.C., the U.S. capital, several video monitors that observe a network of hundreds of government video cameras, including those at national airports, are stationed in a police command center. In Singapore, there are plans to install hundreds of surveillance cameras throughout Changi International Airport. The purpose for these cameras is to observe questionable packages and to constantly observe passengers’ actions.

Tools of the Trade
Several new technological tools have improved the use of security cameras in airports. For example, a digital video recorder, or DVR, server is invaluable to airports. DVR servers can be put into various modes, such as air mode, ground mode, and parking mode, all of which makes airports’ retrieval of huge amounts of footage more efficient. Also, a special software can be used with airport security systems to observe objects and their actions in the airport terminals. When actions stray from “normal” behavior, security is informed. Lastly, extreme security cameras can transform security cameras into infrared cameras. This allows images to be captured at any time of the day, in any weather.

A Hot Issue
Are airports doing enough with their cameras and gadgets? Some technology experts have argued that perhaps the terrorists who participated in the 9-11 attacks could have been arrested in various airports. This, they claim, would have been possible had security systems been more advanced. They note that three of the 19 suspects in the attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center were included on the U.S. government’s “watch lists.” Many experts are supporting the use of biometrics, which is technology involving face-recognition. Others are fighting for the use of security cameras in the cabins of all commercial flights.

While the public wholeheartedly supports added airport security to prevent terrorist attacks, some people are concerned about the possibility of technology infringing on people’s privacy or other Constitutional rights. They believe that the situation could resemble Orwell’s “1984,” in which a Big Brother government is constantly monitoring people’s thoughts and actions. For example, many advocacy groups are concerned that databases of suspected terrorists could also include non-terrorist criminals, or worse, anyone with a driver’s license.

In a post 9-11 world, using improved security cameras in airports is definitely justifiable in keeping similar attacks grounded. Expect, however, the debate about where and to what extent security cameras will be used in airports and airplanes to continue. After all, matters involving security are not concerns to be trifled with.

CCTV cameras are extensively used in organizations, institutions, shopping malls, banks, casinos, airports and homes and have become an indispensable security tool for scrutinizing people and activities. They are used for video surveillance and monitoring for providing high-end security. They have become an integral part of public places, business organizations, and residential areas as well. These cameras transfer captured images via a cable or wireless adapter to the PC or monitor. The footage can be used as evidence and for other security purposes as well.

Here are some interesting facts

* The first CCTV camera was installed in Germany for observing the launch of V2 rocket at Test Stand VII. Walter Bruch, a German engineer was responsible for the entire installation and design of this system.

* It is believed that in the next five years the use of these cameras will escalate by 10 times in UK. Some places in UK have installed talking CCTV, where the operator can talk to the people they monitor.

* The basic technology used in these cameras is CCD (Charge Coupled Device) which converts the captured images into electronic impulses.

* According to a research, the average citizen is caught about 300 times a day on a CCTV camera.

* Approx 25 million these cameras are operating around the world.

* It is believed that 67% burglary incidents will get reduced by installing these cameras. Although just 9% of the consumers actually have CCTV.

* Singapore airport has the largest CCTV system in the world with 3000 cameras.

* Almost all bank cash machines use these cameras

* UK has the maximum number of these cameras per head of population, about one camera for 14 people. And, in all UK has 4 million these cameras that is 20% of the World’s total CCTV camera installations.

* Harrods London has 500 these cameras installed and Brussels airport is testing about 700 digital cameras.

Currently for those on a tight budget, one of the ways to save money is to fly from KL to Johor Bahru, and then to travel overland to Singapore. This adds around 1 hour to the time to complete the trip into downtown Singapore, as you need to deal with the hassles of organizing a taxi or bus into Singapore. This detour is pretty straight forward after you have done it once, but a bit daunting, for newcomers to the route, with the biggest complaint being a lack of adequate, maps, signage or an impartial information desk to explain the process at Senai Airport. You also need to queue for a while at the Singapore border.

New rules will allow flights between the two cities which should start in Dec or January, and it is expected that there will be two flights a day by the low cost air carries Currently flights between Singapore and KL are available on Singapore Air and Malaysia Air, but the flights are premium priced, there is a real incentive to pay the extra as the train system, especially in Singapore, is really easy to use, and the cheapest and fastest way to move around Singapore regardless of the street traffic.

Speculation is that there will be a lot of interest by the governments of other capitol cites in region, that currently have restrictive polices on access, mainly to protect their flag carriers from value airlines like Tiger Air and Air Asia, two of the stronger regional budget airlines operating in the Asia region. Indonesia and its capitol city of Jakarta, it is hopeful, will see the advantages and create an atmosphere that encourages the budget carriers to operate, which will create more opportunities for business to flourish in the southern Asian region.

Recently between the cities with a stop to do some lets say scuba diving in Sipadan, it was very clear that something was remiss in that you could not fly from Singapore to Sipadan * to KL, but needed to fly either into Johor Bahru or KL, and add another flight segment or overland detour. You can bet that many travelers, through the southern Asian region would like to be able to book itineraries that could look like Bangkok to Phuket Thailand, to KL Malaysia to Sipadan in Borneo to Angeles City or Manila in the Philippines, to Singapore, to Bali Indonesia, back to Bangkok. Which would be a great smorgasbord of all that the region offers; if you could get that as a 5 to 10 stop package I think you would have a real winner for Asia visitors.

It is very common to see passengers hand carry along their laptop while boarding air plane. It is because they need to access the internet for some reason during their long trip while on the plane.

Is there any airlines that has internet access which allows passenger to use? Through my experience, Singapore Airlines has this facilities that provides personal computer use on every passenger seat to serve the net for free while the plane is taking you up in the air. This has not only facilitate those on business trips, mothers can keep their children occupied too with any online games that can be found in the net.

This inflight entertainment system can be found only with Singapore Airlines, even though you are traveling with economy class. To make flying more enjoyable for its passengers, Singapore Airlines, is adding bigger screens, more in-flight movies and a PC, running Red Hat Inc.’s distribution of the Linux operating system, in every seat on its newest planes.

Singapore Airlines latest investments is to out stand their inflight services with any other airlines. They do need seems to loose out in this areas but actually hoping to boost profits. Beside focusing on the entertainment side, you will noticed a special designed and specially made passengers seats that made me cosy in any sitting positions. For long and comfortable sleeping positions, economy class seats are not well recommended. Comfort and entertainment in an any Airlines will help to attract more passengers even competitions are felt among other airlines too.
